King’s Daughters has scheduled two free prostate cancer screening events for September:
  • 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13 at King’s Daughters Medical Center Ohio, 2001 Scioto Trail, Portsmouth, Ohio. Urologist Christopher Schmidt, D.O., will conduct the screening.
  • 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Tri-State Regional Cancer Center, 706 23rd St., Ashland, Ky. Radiation oncologists Jeffrey Lopez, M.D., and Terry Justice, M.D., will perform the screenings.
Appointments are required and may be made by calling 1-888-377-KDMC.

Recommendations on routine prostate cancer screening have changed. The screening is no longer recommended for men at average risk of developing the disease or for those age 70 and older.

It is approved for men at high risk of developing the disease – following an informed discussion of screening risks and benefits. Men at high risk include those who have a family history of prostate cancer between the ages of 40 and 54. It is also recommended for all men age 55 to 69.

The screening includes a digital rectal exam and PSA test. Results of the PSA test will be mailed to participants’ home. Uncertain about your risk or whether you should have the screening? We recommend you speak with your family physician or other healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of the screening.
