New MRI makes testing quicker, more enjoyable
The last word that usually comes to mind when one thinks about medical testing is enjoyable. But that’s exactly what the new MRI suite at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland is offering patients.

That’s because KDMC has invested in a special lighting package that helps transport patients from a cold, clinical setting to one filled with the soothing sights and sounds of nature.

“We know that having an MRI can be a stressful experience,” said Shawn Boggs, executive director of outpatient services at KDMC. “We wanted to do something to make the experience as relaxing and stress-free as possible,” he said.

The new MRI, a 1.5T Siemens Magnetom Aera, was installed at the hospital May and became operational in June. The new machine represents a $1 million investment on the part of the hospital.

“The Siemens equipment offers many benefits to patients,” Boggs said, including faster scan times, a larger bore, additional scanning capabilities and higher resolution images.

“The large bore means patients have more room during scanning, helping to alleviate anxiety or any claustrophobia they may have,” Boggs noted. The equipment can accommodate a variety of patient sizes and shapes, including patients weighing up to 550 pounds.

The Sentient MRI lighting suite, which was installed with the new equipment, represents an innovative, personalized and stress-relieving approach to imaging suite design. The Sentient Suite gives patients control of the environment, allowing them to select from among several themes to be viewed during scanning.

“The Sentient Suite provides a distraction with original, personalized high-definition nature video paired with complementary lighting and music,” Boggs said. The Sentient Suite helps to reassure, support and relax patients throughout the exam.

Patients can choose from a variety of themes, including:

  • Big Sur, California
  • Mount Hood, Oregon
  • Space (courtesy of NASA)
  • Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, N.M.
  • Sea Creatures
  • Fall Colors
  • Misty River
  • Cloud Daydream
  • Flowers
  • Waterfalls
  • Zoo
  • Puzzles

These pleasant and engaging images help patients, especially children and those with claustrophobia, successfully complete the MRI study.
