Feb. 25 Open House focuses on Know Your Numbers

his heart month, King’s Daughters heart specialists have been emphasizing the importance of knowing the numbers that add up to a healthier heart: blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), and exercise.

From noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, the public will have the opportunity to explore the importance of these numbers, ask questions and learn what they can do to improve their heart health as King’s Daughters Cardiology hosts its #KnowYourNumbers Open House.

The event will take place in the KDMS Cardiology offices, Suite 230, Medical Plaza B, 613 23rd St., Ashland. A free Healthy Heart with EKG screening is being offered, which includes checks of blood sugar, total cholesterol, and blood pressure – three of the important numbers for heart health. No appointment is needed.

King Daughters Center for Healthy Living will have information on calculating BMI, another heart health number, along with information about its medical and surgical weight loss programs and diabetes education.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program will be on hand to talk about the importance of exercise, both before and after a cardiac event. Exercise – at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week – is another of the important numbers to know and monitor.

Students in the culinary program at Boyd County High School will be offering healthy tastes and recipes. Additional refreshments will be available.

Free flu shots will be offered, too.

KDMS Tri-State Vascular Specialists will be performing the low-cost Vascular Disease Screening in its offices, Suite 140 of Medical Plaza B. The screening consists of ultrasounds of the carotid and abdominal aorta to check for blockages and weaknesses and an ankle-brachial index study to evaluate circulation in the legs and feet. Cost for the screening is $80. Appointments are required and may be made by calling (606) 326-1675.

Other departments participating in the #KnowYourNumbers Open House include the Heart Failure Clinic, Cardiac Cath Lab, Sleep Medicine, and Tobacco Cessation.
