EUS-FNA

King's Daughters Gastroenterologist Liege Diaz, M.D., specializes in endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration—a minimally invasive procedure that uses sound waves (ultrasound) to examine the gastrointestinal tract.

EUS-FNA allows the physician to see organs and structures not visible during routine gastrointestinal endoscopy, including layers of the GI tract wall, the liver, pancreas, lymph nodes and bile ducts.

The EUS scope provides continuous real-time ultrasound guidance, allowing the physician to obtain a tissue sample using a very fine needle (FNA). Cells obtained are analyzed for abnormalities, such as cancer.

The EUS-FNA is generally performed under monitored anesthesia care. Recovery time can take between 20 minutes to an hour.
