King's Daughters is proud to have both
graduate and
undergraduate level learners at our facility. Currently we host orthopaedic residents
from Marshall University School of Medicine, and are in the process of
hosting our own family medicine residency program.
In addition, we are proud to facilitate the training of over 1,000 learners
each year in our facility, including the following health care professional students:

Meet Our Team
Educational Team
The Educational Team at King's Daughters Medical Center meets every other
Friday to review the Undergraduate and Graduate Educational needs and
direction of the program. This is led by
Kelly Hurt, Vice President of People Services.
Designated Institutional Officer
Mark Detherage, MD
Dr. Detherage earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville
School of Medicine in Louisville, Ky. (1997) He completed residency at
McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C. (2000). A board-certified
family practice physician, Dr. Detherage maintains practice at KDMS -
Detherage Family Care in Ashland.
Dr. Detherage leads the following system initiatives:
- Network development, integrated practices
- Population health
- Corporate Compliance
Director of Student Education
Aaron McGuffin, M.D.
Dr. Aaron McGuffin became the director of Student Education at King's Daughters
in August 2016. He completed his Medicine-Pediatric training in 2003 at
Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Dr. McGuffin
is a former associate professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Marshall,
where he served as the senior associate dean for Medical Student Education
from 2005-2013. He also was the program director for the Department of
Medicine-Pediatrics from 2004-2011.
He currently practices both inpatient and outpatient pediatrics at King's
Daughters. As a result of his passion for patient care and medical education,
Dr. McGuffin created
Universal Notes for Medical Students in 2014, a comprehensive e-learning and assessment educational tool with
accompanying apps, which has been used by students and residents across
the globe.
He is married to his wonderful wife Eden (who also doubles as his running
partner), and has four children: Katelyn, Ryan, Parker, and Avery, and
a new chocolate lab named Dobby.
