King's Daughters receives $22K grant to fight opioid epidemic

King’s Daughters has received a $22,264 grant to be used toward fighting the opioid epidemic in Boyd County.

The grant comes from the Cardinal Health Foundation’s Generation Rx Prescription Drug Misuse Prevention Education for Youth grant program.

King’s Daughters, in partnership with Ashland Independent, Boyd County and Fairview school districts, will provide medication safety education to fourth- and fifth-grade students. King’s Daughters also is collaborating Hillcrest-Bruce Mission and Ramey-Estep to provide medication-safe home education for parents and other caregivers.

“This grant will support our efforts to address medication safety and reduce misuse in the area,” said Elaine Corbitt, King’s Daughters executive director of Community Relations. “We believe targeting prevention is a step in the right direction,” she said.

King’s Daughters was among 40 organizations in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia to receive the prevention education grant from the Cardinal Health Foundation. The grants are designed to expand medication safety education for thousands of students in K-12 schools and universities, using Generation Rx educational materials.

Over the next year, King’s Daughters will engage students and parents in interactive prevention sessions and meet regularly with other grantees to share progress and best practices. The collaborative will be led by prevention education experts from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy.

"All of the organizations selected for funding share our goal of turning the tide on the opioid epidemic," said Jessie Cannon, Vice President of Community Relations at Cardinal Health. "Ultimately, we expect our grantees to learn from each other — and we will learn from them. As they develop best practices, our goal is to spread this work throughout the country, and foster solutions to this complex public health crisis.”
