The start of the new year is the perfect time to reflect and reassess how you’re dealing with the stressors in your life. If you’ve resolved to have a stress-less 2026, here are some things to try.
Start small: Little changes in your daily routine can have a big impact on your outlook and overall well-being. Pick one or two things, then once you get in the habit, gradually add more. Prioritize a good night’s sleep. Get outside for a few minutes. Eat more nutritious foods. Find an exercise you enjoy. Set out your clothes and pack your lunch the night before. Spend a few minutes daily tidying up your space. Reduce clutter in your home, office and automobile.
Be social: This doesn’t mean social media. Be social in person! Join or start a club. Take lessons – dance, music, sewing, archery, etc. You’ll learn a new skill and meet new people. Volunteer to help those in need. Research suggests that seniors who volunteer live longer, experience less depression and spend less time hospitalized than others. Don’t worry, be happy: Only you can control how you view the world. Strive for optimism. (Glass is half full, as opposed to half empty.) Reduce negative self-talk. Smile and you’re sure to get a smile back. Be helpful without being asked. Keep a file of videos, stories or quotes that make you laugh.
Have a plan: Develop a list of personal ways to ward off stress. Try breathing exercises, meditating, going for a walk, listening to music, taking a dance break, playing with your pet – anything that temporarily shifts your focus and lightens your mood.
If all else fails… Ask for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, overbooked or just over it, ask family, friends and coworkers for help. Then, return the favor!
Seek professional advice: If stress is getting the better of you, it might be time to seek professional help. Consider meeting with a counselor or asking your primary care provider for a referral to UK King’s Daughters Outpatient Behavioral Health, where you will find experienced, compassionate professionals who can help you achieve your goals.
