When to get a mammogram
The American Cancer Society recommends women get a mammogram based on this schedule:
Women should also know how their breasts normally look and feel and report
any breast changes to a health care provider right away.
King’s Daughters Breast Care Center is conveniently located on the second floor of the Center for Advanced
Imaging, 2225 Central Ave., Ashland.
The center provides fully digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast
MRI, and a digital 3D stereotactic unit for minimally invasive breast biopsies.
In addition, lab, counseling by a certified breast health specialist, a
DEXA bone density scanner and a variety of support programs are available
at the center.
KDMC’s Mobile Mammography Unit travels throughout eastern Kentucky
and southern Ohio, providing access to digital mammography at our Family
Care Centers, physician offices, work places and other locations. All
testing is performed by specially trained and certified mammography technologists.
King’s Daughters radiologists use the R2 ImageChecker®, a special
computer program that acts like a “spellchecker” for medical
images to help flag suspicious areas on a mammogram.
If you're a woman over the age of 40, schedule your annual screening
mammogram today by calling (606) 408-1111. A physician order is not necessary
for screening mammography.
Our patients now can have 3D mammography! Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, these 3D exams are
clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers,
while simultaneously decreasing the number of women asked to return for
In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason
why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal,
leading to unnecessary callbacks. A 3D exam includes a three-dimensional
method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.
A 3D exam includes both 2D images and tomosynthesis scans. During the tomosynthesis-dimensional
portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast,
taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack
of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one
layer at a time. A 3D exam requires no additional compression and takes
just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.
Our 3D system, the Hologic system, is the only clinically superior breast
tomosynthesis system as approved by the FDA. The new system is recommended
for women of all ages and breast densities. The system allows King’s
Daughters radiologists to more effectively pinpoint the size, shape and
location of abnormalities. This leads to better detection and greater
peace of mind for our patients.
Large clinical studies in the U.S. and Europe have demonstrated the positive
benefits of this 3D exam. The largest study to date on breast cancer screening
using this exam found:
- A 41 percent increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers.
- A 29 percent increase in the detection of all breast cancers.
- A 15 percent decrease in women recalled for additional imaging.
Affirm Prone Breast Biopsy System
King's Daughters is proud to offer the Affirm Prone Breast Biopsy System.
Affirm delivers faster, more comfortable procedures by increasing automation,
providing superior imaging and giving 360-degree access to the breast,
creating a better experience for patients.
With high-quality 2D or 3D (tomosynthesis) imaging and a field of view
that's more than 6.5 times larger than older generations of prone
bipsy systems, clinicians can visualize more tissue and pinpoint subtle
lesions and faint calcifications that may not be visible on older systems.
More than 95 percent of patients reported their Affirm prone biopsy procedure
was faster, more comfortable and less painful than expected.
If you need a mammogram or other follow-up services and financial considerations
are preventing you from getting the care you need, please give us a call.
King's Daughters has received grant funding through the Kentucky Breast
Cancer Research Education and Trust Fund and may be able to help. If you
live in Kentucky, please call (606) 408-2650 to see if you qualify.
