CT Scan

Computed tomography, also known as CT, or CAT, scan uses X-rays to produce images of internal body structures. CT provides greater detail of soft tissue such as organs or blood vessels than a traditional X-ray. CT can also be used for a tissue or fluid biopsy. A CT scan typically last 10 to 90 minutes, depending upon the area being imaged.

Preparation for a CT scan includes removing all jewelry (and piercings). Patients may be asked to wear a hospital gown.

Depending on the type of exam, patients may:

• Be instructed not to eat or drink anything for three hours prior to the procedure.
• Be given special instructions regarding their medications
• Have an IV started (contrast exams)
• Be instructed to drink a special medication (oral contrast)

Special instructions are discussed with each patient during the registration process.
