Community Health Needs Assessment

Our Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) was developed in collaboration with Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, local health departments, the Healthy Communities Coalition, and the CHNA Advisory Group. The assessment was conducted between November 2018 and June 2019 and included Boyd, Carter, Greenup counties in Kentucky and Lawrence County, Ohio.

The CHNA included both primary (focus group and questionnaire) and secondary data analysis. The primary data was collected from community members and local leaders representing a broad spectrum of the service area. The focus groups included representation from public health in all four counties, as well as individuals with special knowledge of the medically underserved, low income and vulnerable populations and people with chronic disease.

The following needs were identified through the assessment process:

  1. Substance abuse/misuse
  2. Obesity/diabetes
  3. Cancer prevention
  4. COPD (lung and breathing issues)
  5. Heart disease/high blood pressure

In 2018-2019, KDOH participated, along with with Southern Ohio Medical Center and other organizations, in a Professional Research Consultants, Inc. (PRC) directed Community Health Needs Assessment which covered Scioto and other neighboring counties in Kentucky and Ohio. The PRC assessment incorporated data from both quantitative and qualitative sources. Primary research included qualitative data gathered through the PRC Community Health Survey and Key Informant Survey. Secondary research included vital statistics and other existing health-related data; these quantitative components allow for trending and comparison to benchmark data at the state and national levels.

Primary data indicated the top health issues facing Scioto County are

  • Heart disease
  • Substance/alcohol abuse
  • Obesity/overweight
  • Tobacco/smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Mental health
  • Nutrition/physical activity

Secondary data collected from local, state and national sources showed that the top issues impacting health are:

  • Heart disease
  • Drug poisoning
  • Obesity/overweight
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer

KDOH leadership met to choose the identified needs that the hospital has the resources to address. The final selection of issues to address includes:

  • Heart disease
  • Cancer prevention/early detection (including tobacco use)
  • Obesity/nutrition
