Breast cancer is all too common

Other than certain types of skin cancer, breast cancer affects more women in the U.S. than any other type of cancer. In fact 1 in 8 women will develop the disease in her lifetime. The good news is, with early detection, breast cancer is beatable.

Breast cancer screening - checking for cancer before there are any symptoms - is one of the most important things women can do to protect their health. This includes monthly self-examination of the breasts; an annual clinical exam performed by a physician or other healthcare provider; and screening mammography.

The American Cancer Society recommends:

  • Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms if they wish to do so.

  • Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.

  • Women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening.

Women should also know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast changes to a healthcare provider right away.

Women should discuss their personal risk of developing breast cancer, as well as benefits of screening mammography, with their primary care provider or ob/gyn to make a decision about what is best for them personally. King's Daughters encourages women to be their own best advocate when it comes to their health!

King's Daughters is pleased to offer the latest in mammography technology to our communities: breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography. 3D mammography has been clinically shown to find 20 to 65 percent more invasive breast cancers than 2D mammography. 3D mammography offers special benefits to women with dense breast tissue and those with implants.

3D Mammography Technology is available at:

  • King's Daughters Breast Care Center, 2225 Central Ave., Ashland.
  • King's Daughters Medical Center Ohio, 2001 Scioto Trail, Portsmouth, Ohio
  • On King's Daughters Mobile Mammography Unit

King’s Daughters radiologists use the R2 ImageChecker®, a special computer program that acts like a “spellchecker” for medical images to help flag suspicious areas on a mammogram.

Affirm Prone Breast Biopsy System

King's Daughters is proud to offer the Affirm Prone Breast Biopsy System. Affirm delivers faster, more comfortable procedures by increasing automation, providing superior imaging and giving 360-degree access to the breast, creating a better experience for patients.

With high-quality 2D or 3D (tomosynthesis) imaging and a field of view that's more than 6.5 times larger than older generations of prone bipsy systems, clinicians can visualize more tissue and pinpoint subtle lesions and faint calcifications that may not be visible on older systems.

More than 95 percent of patients reported their Affirm prone biopsy procedure was faster, more comfortable and less painful than expected.
